First Thoughts on WoW
There is one game loved by many and hated by even more. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, think back to how many times you have heard someone say that this game sucked and that they would never play it and then look at how many people are subscribed to it and playing it now. If you haven’t figured it out yet, the game I’m talking about is World of Warcraft (WoW). There are many professional organizations with WoW teams and even more WoW teams that compete without the backing of an organization.
I recently picked up the game on a 10-day trial for the first time. I’ve played the game before, but that was when a friend lent me their account to play. I can easily say that I can understand why people enjoy playing this game and why others hate it. There are both good and bad in this game and although I’ve never played in tournaments, it is easy to see why this game has over 11.5 million subscribers. I can easily say that this is the best MMORPG game out right now with Warhammer Online at number two.
It is a game many can enjoy because it has a good PvP system, many servers in different continents to ensure that people from different regions can play and to ensure no server has too many players. The main thing about this game is that it leads you wanting more. It has quests that just keep going and going leaving you wanting more. Each class has unique skills that have an amazing animation for each skill. Blizzard designed the game to allow people to pick two professions to train and both flying and riding mounts. The graphics are better than most games despite being out since 2004.
That being said, I can also see why people dislike this game. These are usually the same people who have only watched clips of the game and read about any news on WoW. Of course there are exceptions and there are people who have played the game and truly dislike the game. WoW, just like the rest of North American eSports at the moment, have been under criticism with many scandals. There have been many deaths due to WoW due to addiction to the game, which caused one to play continuously without breaks. In an article written in February, WoW was said to have been more addictive than cocaine.
I’ll let you decide whether or not you like the WoW, but please don’t be one of those people who haven’t even tried it out and have already deciding the game is bad. And please don't make your excuse be "I'm not playing this game because I have to pay monthly." because you can try the game without paying for 10-days and if you found a game you enjoy playing you would be willing to pay for it. I’m saying this because I use to be like that until I tried the game and I must say this WoW can be a good game if you give it a chance especially if one is looking to take a break from other genres in gaming (like I am right now). It can still be is a pretty competitive game, but it’s a good break if you feel like you need a break from other types of games such as RTS or FPS.
With that, I leave with a quote.
“In a consumer society there are inevitably two kinds of slaves: the prisoners of addiction and the prisoners of envy.” (Ivan Illich)
